If you were an avid follower of Disney's Aladdin, I am sure you would have seen the episode, where he has to choose a mirror which shows the real him in its reflection. Impressive plot. But is it just that? a simple thought in an animated series ?
Haven't you ever felt the person staring back at you from the mirror is someone who has an eerie resemblance to you the one who is looking into the mirror, but isn't quite the same you. I have always observed, every mirror has a distinct characteristic of showing you to yourself and it neither changes with the time of the day nor with the angle you look into it and surely not with the amount of light in the room.
I have a repulsive feeling to the 'me' in the mirror on the dressing table, in my room I fear him. But the reflection in mirror on the cupboard is pleasant as well as likeable. So which of the mirror is showing the real me ... this is something which has been baffling me for a long time. And in case one of the mirror shows the real me .... why do the others show an illusion ? The worst of the questions ... what if the mirror on the dressing table shows shows the real me ... can I really loath myself, that too for the way a mirror is projecting me? I have tried to see me in the mirror during different times of the day, with different attires, but the max I could complement myself is ... hmmm OK! that is surely not the complement I want to give myself. Worst, the same attire looks fabulous in the 'other' mirror.
Most reading this blog would claim, it is due to some inherent defects in the mirror, some surface deformations etc. But does it end there ? So if all the mirrors or any reflective surfaces for that matter have surface deformities, have I never seen the real me ? I guess not and I may never.
But are the mirrors telling something, showing a different facet of the multi faceted human mind. It may be one of the many faces a person takes may be just once in a lifetime or probably a few times a day, but they are different faces, and faces say something that cannot be ignored. Whatever you see in the mirror, it may be something you feel is you or may be feel is someone else, but is surely not a mere reflection.
to be continued ....
